The Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Fund was started in 1985 by a small group of neighbors in Seattle's Mount Baker community and is a sponsored activity of the Mount Baker Community Club. The fund was intended to capture the spirit and vision of Martin Luther King, Jr. and to ensure that his dream lives on in all of us. The scholarship is renewable for all four years of college. The goal of this scholarship is to help deserving students achieve the dream of a higher education. The scholarship seeks out students who show financial need and academic promise, have overcome obstacles, and who contribute to their community. The scholarship is limited to students from ethnic or racial groups that are underrepresented in higher education. Students must be a high school senior who is a resident of or attending school in one of the following zip codes and be on track to graduate by June 2023: 98104, 98108, 98118, 98122, 98134, 98144; (Franklin, Garfield, NOVA, interagency sites, Rainier Beach, South Lake, Cleveland and independent schools in these zip codes are all eligible). Students must also be a member of a racial or ethnic group that is underrepresented in higher education: American Indian or Alaskan Native; Cambodian, Filipino, Laotian, Vietnamese; African or Black; Hispanic; Pacific Islander; or multi-racial. Students must also have a family income for 2023 that does not exceed the amount listed by family size in this chart ; plan to enroll at a not-for-profit, accredited college or university in the United States starting in Fall 2025; and file a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) or the Washington Application for State Financial Aid (WASFA). International students, students on foreign exchange or visas and out-of-state residents are not eligible. The application opens on October 1, 2024 and is due on January 31, 2025.
