The VSGC Undergraduate STEM Research Scholarship Program provides awards to students who are enrolled in a program of study in STEM and have a specific faculty-mentored research project that has NASA or aerospace relevance. Allied Health Sciences majors are not eligible for this program. This is a competitive scholarship program, funded by NASA and the Commonwealth of Virginia contributions. Students may apply for a $3,000 student stipend during the academic year; and/or a $3,500 stipend during summer (must be specified in the application); and/or a $1,000 research allocation for materials and travel to support research activities conducted during the academic year and/or $1,000 research allocation during the summer (if doing summer research). Applicants must be enrolled at one of the five Virginia Space Grant Consortium member institutions and must be in a program of study demonstrating an interest in STEM and supporting NASA's mission. Applicants must submit a plan of study, which is an outline of intended coursework for the remainder of their undergraduate degree program. A Research Proposal aligned with NASA's mission is also required. VSGC's undergraduate STEM Research Scholarship Program encourages talented undergraduate majors to pursue aerospace-related fields and do research with a strong alignment with NASA's Mission Directorates. Applicants should submit a proposal for research that clearly describes the research objective and methodology. A statement written by the student in consultation with the faculty advisor should describe the key elements of the proposed research and plan of study. All research projects must be mentored by a faculty member and this mentor will be required to submit a letter of reference for the project. Applicants will be asked to specifically identify how their research relates to NASA's Mission Directorates. Applicants must also submit Letters of Recommendation and provide the names and contact information for two references of which one must be the applicant's current faculty advisor. The letters of recommendation should assess the applicant's potential as well as their progress and academic achievements. Please visit the scholarship's website for more information.
