The University of New Mexico, founded in 1889, is a public, comprehensive institution. It has the unique quality of having a wonderful moderate climate, with a ski area less than 30 miles away. Programs are offered through the Colleges of Architecture, Arts and Sciences, Dental Programs, Education, Engineering, Fine Arts, Nursing, and Pharmacy, and the Schools of Management and Medicine. Students may choose to work at UNM''s Maui, Hawaii High Performance Computer Center. UNM has a number of engineering research and development opportunities in the fields of space and nuclear power, high technology materials, micro-engineered ceramics, microelectronics, photonic technology, waste management, plastics and satellite technology. Its 729-acre campus is located in Albuquerque.
