Lesley was founded in 1909 as a teacher-training school. While still best known for its teacher education programs, Lesley has maintained a consistent focus on a select group of disciplines which embody its mission: education, human services, management, and the arts. Its schools include: Lesley College (for undergraduates), Art Institute of Boston at Lesley, Graduate School of Arts and Social Sciences, and School of Education. Lesley College has been coeducational since 2005. The five-acre campus is located in Cambridge, close to to Harvard Square.
