Bard College, founded in 1860, is a private, liberal arts college. It seeks through a writing-intensive, cross-disciplinary and individualized curriculum to cultivate in its students aspirations beyond any they have encountered before coming to college. The faculty, in small seminar classes and through one-on-one tutorials and close advising, builds students'' confidence in their ability to think, use language, engage other people, vindicate the relation of ideas to action, and sustain a lifelong curiosity. Its 600-acre campus is located in Annandale-on-Hudson, 90 miles north of New York City.
