Appalachian State, a public university, was founded in 1899, designated a Normal School in 1925, became a state Teachers College in 1929 and gained university status in 1967. Programs are offered through the Colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, and Fine and Applied Arts, and the School of Music. Its campuses, totaling 1,100 acres, are located in Boone, 95 miles from Winston-Salem.
