Founded in 1903, Michigan University is a public, comprehensive university. It is a premier student-centered, research-intensive institution, one of the nation's 60 largest universities. Its 26,000 students come from every corner of the globe, including almost 100 other nations. Nearly one fourth of WMU's students pursue degrees in one of the university's 65 master's or 25 doctoral degree programs. Among the diverse areas in which WMU enjoys an international reputation for research and teaching are medieval studies, graph theory, blind rehabilitation, aviation and experimental atomic physics. Programs are offered through the Colleges of Aviation, Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, Engineering and Applied Sciences, Fine Arts, and Health and Human Services, and the Division of Continuing Education. Its 504-acre campus is located in Kalamazoo, 145 miles from Detroit.
