Washington University in St. Louis, founded in 1853, is a private, comprehensive institution. One of the distinguishing features of the university is the ability to study across disciplines and take advantage of the variety of courses offered by a major research university. Students can major in one subject and minor in another, earn an undergraduate degree with two majors, earn two undergraduate degrees from two different schools within the university or earn both bachelor''s and master''s degrees in the same discipline. Programs are offered through the College of Arts and Sciences and the Schools of Architecture, Art, Business Administration, and Engineering and Applied Science. Many say that the supportive atmosphere is unique, that faculty and students are friendly in a way that reflects the university''s midwestern location. The combination of this atmosphere with the excellent and flexible academic program is why students choose Washington University. Its 169-acre main campus is located in St. Louis.
