Muhlenberg College, founded in 1848, is a private, church-affiliated, liberal arts college. It values and seeks to nurture a strong sense of community. Professors routinely give students their home phone numbers, for example, and student-faculty relationships are close. The college has a long history of success with premedical and prelaw school placement, as well as very strong English and writing traditions. In recent years, the theatre arts program has won numerous awards and is extremely popular with students as well. The college's 38-acre environmental field station and 40-acre arboretum provide research opportunities for students in field biology and environmental science. Its 75-acre campus, including among its buildings a neo-Gothic chapel, is located in Allentown, 55 miles north of Philadelphia.
